The Torres Vaz Freire Stud Farm was founded in 1978 by Marcos Torres Vaz Freire and his son Carlos Torres, with Rio Frio and João Moura’s brand mares.
Its first vocation was and still is training horses for bullfighting. This can be proved by the fact that several bullfighting horse riders have used Torres Vaz Freire brand horses. We can point out the following horses:
-
DANÚBIO (also known as NILO) used by Vasco Taborda, has won the “Gaston Santos Trophy” in 1996, for the best bullfighting Lusitano horse in the 1995 season.
-
VILA FRANCA, also used by Vasco Taborda and Paulo Caetano;
- NAPOLEÃO was used by António Domecq;
- CALIFA used by António Manuel Pereira;
- IMPERADOR used by Marco José e LARANJA by Xavier Maioral.
On the other hand, because its horses are not only used in bullfighting, the Torres Vaz Freire Stud Farm has won since 1996, through its horse rider Rodrigo Torres, the Portuguese traditional equitation contests which take place during the National Horse Fair in Golegã.
At the moment, the herd of mares is composed by ten Torres Vaz Freire brand animals, all of Veiga breeding line and they pasture in Herdade de Vila Formosa. The Stud Farm has been using stallions such as ORIENTAL, NILO and HÁBIL (all Manuel Veiga brand), HERCULES (also known as MALHINHA) (Lima Monteiro brand), MOSCATEL (Herdade do Retaxo brand) and RÁJÁ (Assunção Coimbra brand).
